Cross-State Showdown: Recap of the Fourth Annual Rogue Dual at Avila University

The fourth annual Rogue Dual took place on April 19 at Avila University featuring fourteen state champions, and one runner-up across Kansas. This event marks the annual show-off between Kansas and Missouri featuring female state champions & runner-ups from both states.

For the first time in dual history, team Kansas made history with its first four-timer competitors, competing in the Dual. Nicole Redmond (Olathe South) and Olivia Stean (Bonner Springs) have been on the team for the last four years and both also made history this season by being some of the first Kansas girls to win the KSHSAA state tournament 4 times.

Redmond’s reasoning behind why she continues to accept the invitation for the dual is she has seen it grow over the last 4 years and is a little part to get growing each year.

“I kept doing the duals through my [high school] career because it wasn’t necessarily about the match but the fact that I get to be the reason why women's wrestling is growing”. Redmond states

Followed behind Redmond and Stean being four time competitors, team members Kendra Hurla (Rossville), Kaylan Hitchcock (Olathe North), Sage Rosario (Manhattan), and Holly Thacher (Oskaloosa) have competed at least twice in the dual since the start.

Team Kansas picked up 5 wins at the dual by Hurla, Gomez, Hitchcock, Rosario, and Thacher by fall or a decision. But in the end, they still fell short 57-27 to Missouri.

The coaching crew for Team Kansas was Kit Harris (Baker University) Jay Johnston (Basehor-Linwood), Damon Parker (Washburn Rural), Courtney Horgan (Roseville), and Nick Northern (Chanute).

“The Rogue Dual was a fun night of some great wrestling by some tough young ladies. I loved watching them compete and represent their state. Events like this help grow girls' wrestling, ” Coach Harris states.

With five Kansas girls securing victories and two of them having consecutive appearances in the dual tournament over the past four years, it has shown dedication to the sport of wrestling in Kansas. The outcome didn’t favor team Kansas, but the dual showcased some of the best Kansas female wrestlers.
